THE FIRST SERVICE POINT OPPORTUNITY (more to come, you need 2 total) - January 17th: by Jan. 17 (Wed) bring hygiene kit (soap, deodorant, tooth brush, tooth paste, lotion [or powder] in a gallon size ziploc bag with your name written on a paper sealed in the bag) to campus ministry or Mr. Vogelson's office. DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE BAG, DO WRITE YOUR NAME ON A PIECE OF PAPER AND PUT IT IN THE BAG!!!!!

SENIOR VOTING results - Aishvarya Arora, Sal Cocchiaro, and Annamaria Pilato were voted in the order for President, Vice President, and Secretary. 

1) Your second set of hours are due January 17th, the end of Q2. Turn your log sheets in by slipping them into the folders by the science office door (W106a) sometime during that week.  A minimum of 7 hours are due, but any extra hours will roll over and count towards your total for the year. This should bring your yearly total up to 10.  To obtain a new log sheet, click on the bottom of this text box.
2) Service Points - You will have to serve a total of 2 points, each event will be worth 1 point (so you must pick two of the total events).
     
1.      You will be required to provide service to the science community here at St. Francis Prep. Examples of service include: lab aides/assistants, peer tutors (science classes), and open house (science).

     a.       All juniors and new seniors (weren’t involved last year, for any reason) are required to serve a total of 20 hours over the course of this school year (at least 15 by the ceremony).

b.      Returning senior members (active member last year) you are only required to serve 10 total hours by the ceremony date.

2.      All members MUST attend the ceremony, no excuses excepted (March 6th, 2012).

3.      All members MUST serve two service points by attending/participating in two NYSSHS sponsored events/drives (about 90 minutes per event).TBA

4.       You may start your service immediately, ask your current or past science teacher for service hour opportunities and/or sign up as guidance to be a SCIENCE tutor.  You are responsible for keeping your service log (link to print more sheets below).  One paper per submission, do not repeat hours (only hours served during the timeframe of each collection will be counted).

b.      We will have collection points throughout the year to ensure that everyone is on pace to get the required number of hours (20 total for all juniors and new seniors, 10 total for second year seniors)

              i. The collection days will be:

1.      End of 1st Quarter (Nov. 7th), a minimum of two (2) hours

2.      End of 2nd Quarter (Jan. 17th), a minimum of seven (7) hours

3.      Mid-3rd Quarter (Feb. 15th),  approx. six (6) hours are due (seniors, you should only have maybe one or two hours for this submission.

4.      Any juniors with remaining hours must serve them by April 26th.

Collection location (only on the days mentioned above) is by the door to the science office (W-106a).

* The time spent participating in service point activities will not be counted towards your total Science Society service hours.

FRANCISCAN CHAPTER

CHAPTER BY-LAWS

  1. Eligibility for Membership
    1. The student must be in their junior or senior year at St. Francis Prep. The student must have completed 1 year at St. Francis Prep
    2. The student must have a cumulative average of 92.0 or higher.
    3. The student must have the following grade requirements:

                  i.      92 or higher in any regular science and math class.

                  ii.      90 or higher in any honors math and science class.

                  iii.      88 or high in any A.P. math and science class.

                  iv.      A senior may be inducted into the society if 1 grade does not meet the criteria above. All other grades must meet the criteria. This 1 grade must be either:

1.      90 or 91 in a regular class

2.      88 or 89 in an honors class or

3.      86 or 87 in an AP class.

    1. The student must be enrolled in 1 full credit of science. This can be accomplished with any full-year class or any 2 half-year courses. In the case of 2 half-year courses they can either be in separate semesters or combined into one semester.
    2. There is no such thing as "permanent membership;" any student accepted in junior year is re-evaluated for senior year membership.
    3. Senior reinductees need to complete 10 service hours, while new senior inductees must complete 20 service hours.
    4. Junior inductees need to complete 20 service hours to be reconsidered as seniors. Rules for service are described below.
    5. Juniors and Seniors need to complete 2 service points, these will be activities done as a group to serve the community.
  1. Acceptance of the Invitation.
    1. Students are notified through Cor mail of their invitation to join the NYSSHS.
    2. Students must sign a letter of acceptance. This letter includes two caveats:

              i.      Students must attend the ceremony.

                ii.      Students must agree to do school service hours:

                        First year members must complete 20 hours.

                            Second year members must complete 10 hours.

  1. Service Requirements
    1. Students are required to do in-school service.
    2. Service must be science related.
    3. Examples of service can be but are not restricted to:

                 i.      Peer Tutoring through the Guidance Office (W-101)

                 ii.      Teacher assistants (in class or in lab)

                 iii.      Lab aides

                 iv.      Volunteer work at science after-school activities.

    1. Any service not listed must be approved by the chapter moderator before serving.
  1. Service Postings
    1. Students must maintain a service log.
    2. Service log pages will be available for download at the St. Francis Prep website. (Link above)
    3. Log sheets will be collected on the dates specified above.
    4. Log entries must be separate for each work of service done. A signature from any faculty or staff member is needed for each entry.
    5. Service hours are approved only by the moderator. Student entries that do not follow the log requirements, or that includes service outside the boundaries discussed in section 3, may be rejected by the moderator.
  2. Awards
    1. All students inducted will receive a certificate of membership, a society pin, and a logo sticker.
    2. Senior students receive a red and gold honor cord, which is to be worn at graduation.
    3. A medal to the student or students with the greatest number of courses and the highest average (possible).
    4. A medal, at the discretion of the chapter moderator, for service above and beyond what is required (possible).
  3. Officers
    1. The chairman of the Science Department will select a department member to be moderator of the society. Duties include:

                  i.      Selection of candidates based on eligibility criteria.
              
ii.      Procurement of awards.
