Guidance Department: College Counseling
St. Francis Prep is a college preparatory school, and 99% of our graduating
class attends college. All college and scholarship applications are processed
through the
COLLEGE OFFICE - located in N-201. The College Office and the offices of the
senior level counselors contain important college and scholarship information.
COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
As early as possible in senior year, seniors should write to the colleges of their choice
to obtain applications for admission. City University and State University of New
York applications are available in the College Office, and you may wish to check the
application rack outside the College Office for other applications that we may
receive.
SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TESTS (SAT EXAMS)
Seniors should plan to take the SAT at least once in senior year. Certain
colleges require certain SAT II (SUBJECT TESTS), and these should be taken by
the
December test date.
Students
can complete applications for SAT andSAT II on line: www.collegeboard.com.
Students
are responsible for submitting standardized test scores to appropriate colleges.
SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS TO COLLEGE OFFICE
Once you have completed filling out your applications, they should be submitted
to the College Office in N-201. NO COLLEGE OR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
SHOULD BE MAILED TO THE COLLEGES YOURSELF. Please read and follow all
guidelines carefully. (All procedures apply to college applications as
well as scholarship applications)
- College Office hours for submitting applications are Monday-Friday 8:15am-9:20am
and 2:00pm-3:30pm.
- Every application must have a school transcript to accompany it. You
must bring in $5.00 per transcript you are requesting; this is a processing
fee. You may pay in cash or by check made payable to St. Francis Prep. If
you are submitting more than one application at a time, and are paying your
transcript fee by check, you may combine your transcript fees onto one check.
- Envelopes:
- SUNY Applications: Bring the application in the pre-addressed
envelope
- CUNY Applications: You may use the provided envelope,
or a 9x12 envelope addressed to the University Application
Processing Center—NOT the individual college.
- Other applications: Bring the application in a 9X12 envelope,
addressed to the Undergraduate Admissions Office of the college to which
you are applying.
- Each application should have four (4) stamps on the envelope (due
to the recent USPS changes) in the upper right hand corner. Please
write the application deadline in pencil on the back flap of the envelope.
- Please paperclip your check or money order to the application. NO
CASH will be accepted! APPLICATION FEES VARY DEPENDING ON THE INDIVIDUAL
SCHOOL, please refer to the individual application for all fees.
- Each application must be accompanied by an APPLICATION
PROCESSING FORM. Click the Link or go to the
College Office and in W-101
- Letters of Recommendation: Many schools request that students submit
letters of recommendation with their applications. Colleges are looking
for an assessment of your academic performance, therefore it is strongly
suggested that you request a letter of recommendation from a teacher who
taught you in a major academic subject. You should have had this teacher
no earlier than your junior year. If your teacher agrees to write you
a recommendation, please pick up a “Request for Teacher Letter of Recommendation” form
from the College Office or W-101. Submit this form to your teacher
with a stamped business envelope (one for each letter) addressed to the college
receiving the letter. Letters of recommendation do not
have to accompany your application, teachers may send them separately.
- Mid-Year reports should be submitted to the College Office in January with
a stamped and addressed (to the college you are sending the report to) business
envelope.
- Scholarship applications that require a transcript must be submitted the
same way as any college application (envelope, transcript fee. . .)
- If you choose to apply to colleges online, you must inform your counselor
you have done so by indicating it on the Application Processing Form when
you submit your transcript fee to the College Office. Filing online
will not allow another person or your counselor the opportunity to review
your full application and essay to ensure it is free of errors. Therefore,
we strongly suggest that before you submit an application
online that you print out a copy and show it to your counselor for review,
make any necessary changes, and then submit the application online.
- Students are responsible for having their standardized test scores sent
directly to the colleges to which they are applying. Students may
do so by logging on to www.collegeboard.com and following instructions for
test score submission. This can also be done when you register for
the SAT or ACT by listing the colleges you wish to receive your scores.
- Once you submit your application to the College Office, the entire application
must be complete. All forms, essays and accompanying materials (except
letters of recommendation) must be included with your application. You
may not hand in part of an application and submit another part at a later
time. Enclose all materials your counselor needs to fill out WITH your
application. Your counselor will complete these forms when they
are checking your application.
- NEVER give an application to anyone other than the College Office. ALL
APPLICATIONS GET SENT FROM THE COLLEGE OFFICE. This insures their accuracy
and safety of the processing of applications. The department will
record the date you submitted your applications, attach your transcript,
and give the application to your guidance counselor. After your counselor
has completed their part of the application, it will be returned to the College
Office, who will then record the date that your application was mailed from
the College Office.
