Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Review

By Daniella Puitiza '09

Harry Potter returns for another outstanding book. Over the summer, J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, released the sixth installment. In the first 24 hours of its release, it sold over 6.9 million copies in the United States alone.

While recovering from his godfather’s death, Harry returns with his friends, Ron and Hermione, to Hogwarts for their sixth year. Over the summer, terrible events occur as the evil Lord Voldermort rises to power once more. A new Minister of Magic makes changes that affects many while Harry, Ron, and Hermione receive their O.W.L exam results and new responibilities are added.

Once safe at Hogwarts, Harry returns to find even more changes than ever. There are new teacher assignments, as well as the discovery of the mysterious "Half-Blood Prince," a mysterious old potion's student whose self-invented magic Harry finds to be very helpful.

Dumbledore, returning as headmster, begins to give Harry "private lessons," in hopes of arming him with helpful tips for his future battles with Lord Voldermort. Draco Malfoy, Harry's enemy, is back again and meaner than ever. He has a new secret and a special "mission" to do. Harry makes it his main priority to find out what Malfoy's up to.

Many problems occur between the students. As in every high school, romance ruins friendships and causes tension between them. Harry faces his most diificult year yet. He learns a lot from his classes, teachers, and fellow classmates. He is eager to learn everything about Voldemort because the information can save his life. Despite the excitement throughout the story, his adventure is crushed by the high-suspense ending of the book.

Will Harry make it through his sixth year? Or will he be crushed by the new problems that arise?

With so much action, suspense, and a great climax, this book is the best in the series. It keeps you wanting to turn the page. Check it out yourself by buying a copy today in your nearest bookstore.
