Many Prep students agree that the school's most anticipated season in sports this year is basketball. They continue to go to the games and support the Terriers with enthusiasm.
Varsity
This year, Prep's Varsity basketball team has improved its performance since last season. Last year, Prep was at the bottom of the East AA Division of the CHSAA, not winning many games and struggling to prove themselves a good team.
This year, it has been a completely different story. The team has learned from its mistakes, with a record at presstime of 16 wins and 5 losses — nothing like last year's 8 wins and 12 losses.
Prep's Varsity basketball team, which includes seniors Chris Aviles, Michael Cavataio, Kevin Cheddie, Rory Cregan, Billy Leckie, JT Matzelle, Keith Nandin, Darren Noisette, Jason Philippe, juniors Nick Mulero, James Kikel, Marc Manzo, sophomore Bob Nacer and senior manager Chadwick Morgan, has worked very hard. They started their winter season on December 1, 2006, with a win against Fordham Prep, and they continued their winning streak for the next five games. The schedule includes games against many schools, including Bishop Loughlin, Molloy and Holy Cross. For the most part, the Terriers have been successful in the majority of those games.
One of the most exciting games that the Varsity basketball team had was on February 9, against Xaverian. In this game, Prep paid a special tribute to Michael Lynch. Michael Lynch '86, used to play basketball at Prep. After he graduated from Prep, he became a New York City Fighterfighter. On 9/11, he made the ultimate sacrifice: he died trying to rescue people from the Twin Towers. On February 9, Prep retired his jersey number, which was 24. Mr. McLaughlin, Brother Leonard, Brother Robert, Mr. Fischetti, and Mr. Fontanetta all made speeches about Michael Lynch and how talented, and thoughtful he was. After the speeches, his family and friend were given flowers, shirts dedicated to Michael Lynch, and his jerseys.
Junior Varsity
The JV basketball team has also been trying to do its best. Last year, the JV team was very strong. This year's team, which consists primarily of sophomores, is trying to live up to that expectation.
The JV season, like Varsity's, started on December 1, 2006, against Fordham Prep. Unfortunately, the JV team lost this opening game, and several games after that.
Although they have lost a number of games, the JV basketball players have a strong unity. They are fighters, and they play hard in every game. They never give up, and are very determined. This determination will help them get far, and perhaps help them have a better season in the end.
Freshmen
The Freshman basketball team consists of Walter Bryant, Brian Caffery, Philip Cesare, Connor Cregan, Osamuede Egharevba, Stephen Evers, Chris Fesler, Vincent Giglio, Roger Harris, Kevin Kasparian, Conor Kennedy, Brandon Lodge, Jacob Moore, Ben Tockarshewsky, Danny Wagner and George Wlazlo. The Freshman team has much ambition. On the court, it is evident that they work hard and they have a great deal of teamwork. They
